In May 2018, the made-up term "Ligma" began spreading as a joke. This type of joke typically features an unusual word that leads to a silly, often vulgar punchline, such as "updog" or "deez nuts." The goal of using "Ligma" is to get someone to ask, "What's Ligma?" The response is usually "Ligma balls," with "Ligma" sounding like "lick my." A couple of "Ligma" jokes were found on social media in May and June 2018, but the hoax surrounding the death of Richard Tyler Blevins, a professional gamer known as Ninja, helped to propel the joke's popularity in mid-July. A user on Instagram spread a false rumor that Ninja had died from a rare disease called "Ligma." The hoax gained traction online, with various websites sharing the viral story about the prank. Initially, Ninja threatened to ban users who mentioned
