Today I will show you how to refute the King’s Gambit as Black. The King’s Gambit is a chess opening that begins with the moves: 1.e4 e5 2.f4. White’s idea behind giving away the pawn is to gain rapid development, dominate the center, castle kingside, and attack on the semi-open f-file. The Falkbeer Countergambit is a great choice to counter the King’s Gambit. It happens after 1.e4 e5 2.f4 d5. Black offers a pawn back instead of accepting White’s gambit with 2…exf4. White’s move 3.fxe5 is a terrible blunder as Black can play 3…Qh4+ – even the world champion Magnus Carlsen made this blunder. After the standard capture, 3.exd5, I recommend that you play the rock-solid 3…exf4 as it completely shuts down all the White’s ideas. The Abbazia Defense allows you (Black) to develop your pieces easily, castle quickly, and dominate the center and kingside, instead of White doing that. You can find the PGN of this opening below: P.S. We’ll have an important announcement in the next days, so please stay tuned!
