Cis life: what did you call me and why? The Oxford English Dictionary defines the word "cisgender" as "denoting or relating to a person whose self-identity conforms with the gender that corresponds to their biological sex; not transgender." Cisgender has its origin in the Latin-derived prefix cis, meaning "on this side of,” which is the opposite of trans, meaning "across from,” or "on the other side of.” The term can be traced to 1994, when biologist Dana Leland Defosse, used 'cisgender' in a newsgroup post..
